WOMEN: A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

There is a general tendency in the 'middle east' and the धार्मिक (dharmic i.e. Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism) civilizations to assume that the freedom that women in the west enjoy is due to Christianity. 

Nothing could be farther from truth. The freedom that women enjoy in the west, is despite Christianity and not due to Christian dogmas. The wave of 'free thinking' that swept through the west in the last 2-3 centuries provided the atmosphere to break through the oppressive regime of the church. It resulted in advancement in all aspects of humanity viz. status of women, sciences and art.

One has to just look at the books of Christianity to find out the truth. Although the new testament is a little mellowed down in its treatment of 'others' when compared to old testament, still, as far as status of women is concerned, the contempt for the half of humanity is visible. Take a look.

NEW TESTAMENT ON WOMEN

1 Corinthians 11/3 (link)

Now I want you to realize that the Messiah is the head of every man, and man is the head of the woman, and God is the head of the Messiah. 

तुम ये जान लो कि मसीह का स्वामी गौड है, मसीह हर पुरुष का स्वामी है और हर महिला का स्वामी उसका पति है |

34. Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 

३४. चर्च में महिलाओं को चुप रहना चाहिए. इसाई विधान के अनुसार उन्हें बोलने की आज्ञा नहीं है बल्कि अधीन बने रहना चाहिए |

35. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

३५. यदि वो कुछ पूछना चाहती हैं तो अपने पति से, घर जा कर पूछें ; क्योंकि कोई महिला चर्च में बोले तो ये चर्च का अपमान है |

11. A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness.

११. नारियों को चाहिए कि वो चुपचाप, पूर्ण अधीनता से केवल सुने |

12. But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 

१२. मेरी आज्ञा नहीं है कि वो पढ़ाये अथवा पुरुषों पर प्रभाव रखे, उसे तो केवल चुप रहना है |

13. For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. 

१३. क्योंकि आदम का निर्माण इव से पहले हुआ था|

14. And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 

१४. और आदम ने धोखा नहीं खाया था, ये तो नारी ने ही धोखा खाया था इसलिए सीमा का उल्लंघन कर के गिर गयी |

15. But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.

१५. किन्तु इस पर भी महिलायें, बच्चे पैदा करने के लिए बची रहेंगी यदि वो श्रद्धा, प्रेम, पवित्रता एवं आत्म नियंत्रण रखेंगी |

OLD TESTAMENT ON WOMEN

The old testament also holds women in the same contempt. Here are a few glimpses.

Deuteronomy 24 (link)

1. If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house,

१. यदि कोई पुरुष किसी महिला से विवाह करने के उपरान्त उसमें कुछ अनुचित पाता है और इससे वो खिन्न हो जाता है, तो वो उसे एक सम्बन्ध विच्छेद पत्र (तलाकनामा एक अरबी शब्द है : हिंदी अथवा संस्कृत में ऐसा कोई शब्द नहीं है) लिख कर उसे थमा दे और उसे घर से निकाल दे,

2. And if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man,

२. और उसके घर से जाने के उपरान्त यदि वो किसी और की बीवी बन जाती है,

3. And her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies,

३. और यदि उसका दूसरा पति भी उसे नापसंद करके उसे एक तलाकनामा लिख कर निकाल देता है, अथवा मर जाता है,

4. Then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

४. तो उसके पहले पति को, जिसने उसे तलाक़ दिया था, उससे पुनः विवाह नहीं करना है क्योंकि वो अशुद्ध हो चुकी है. ये तुम्हारे लॉर्ड की नज़र में एक घिनौना कार्य होगा| उस जगह में पाप मत फैलायो जो तुम्हें तुम्हारे लॉर्ड गौड ने दी है |

Genesis - 3/16 (link)

To the woman he (God) said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

और महिला से गौड ने कहा, "मैंने निश्चय कर लिया है कि मैं प्रसव के समय तुम्हें होने वाली पीड़ा को कई गुणा बढ़ा दूंगा, तुम पीड़ा सहन करके ही संतान उत्पन्न कर सकोगी | तुम अपने पति की इच्छा करोगी, वो तुम्हारे ऊपर शासन करेगा |

7. “If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as male servants do.

७. यदि कोई आदमी अपनी बेटी को नौकर के रूप में बेच देता है तो उसे पुरुष नौकर की भांति मुक्त नहीं किया जा सकता |

8. If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself, he must let her be redeemed.

८. यदि वो अपने स्वामी को, जिसने उसे चुना है, आनंद नहीं दे सकती, तो स्वामी उसे बेच कर अपना धन ले सकता है |

Leviticus - 12 (link)

1. The LORD said to Moses,

१. लॉर्ड ने मूसा से कहा,

2 “Say to the Israelites: ‘A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, 

२. इसराइलियों से कह दो: 'जब कोई महिला एक लड़के को जनती है तो वो सात दिनों के लिए गन्दी हो जाती है,

4. Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified,

४. इसके पश्चात उसे पवित्र होने में ३३ दिन लगते हैं  

5. If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean ...Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.

५. यदि वो कन्या को जनती है तो वो दो सप्ताह के लिए गन्दी हो जाती है....उसे पवित्र होने में ६६ दिन लगते हैं.

Leviticus - 19/20 (link)

And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that [is] a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free.

यदि कोई पुरुष किसी ऐसी महिला के साथ सम्भोग (बलात्कार) करता है जो की गुलाम है और किसी से सगाई कर चुकी है और उसे (उसकी कीमत ले कर) मुक्त नहीं किया गया है तो उसे कठोर दंड दिया जाएगा | उनकी हत्या नहीं की जायेगी क्योंकि वो मुक्त नहीं थी |

(यहाँ उल्लेखनीय है कि दंड बलात्कारी को नहीं दिया जाएगा बल्कि महिला को दिया जाएगा)

WOMEN - A VEDIC PERSPECTIVE

This post contain some of the verses mentioned in the Veds. They tell us the high esteem that is accorded to women in the only 'DHARM' of the world.

 

अथर्व वेद

सूक्त ४६ 

मन्त्र - १

सिनीवाली पृथुष्टके या देवानामसि स्वसा |
जुषस्व हव्यमाहुतम प्रजां देवि दिदिडिढ ||

(पृथुष्टके) हे स्तुति योग्य (सिनीवाली) अन्न्दायिनी गृहपत्नी! (या) जो (देवानाम) दिव्य गुणों का (स्वसा) उचित प्रकाश करने योग्य (असि)  है, वह देवि, (नः) हमारे लिए, ऐसी (प्रजाम) संतान प्रदान करे जो (हव्यम) ग्रहण करने योग्य हो, तथा (आहुतम) स्वीकृत व्यवहार (जुषस्व) का सेवन करने वाली हो

O worthy of praise, meal provider mistress of the house! You are gifted with divine qualities which you can illuminate/spread. Provide us with such progeny that is well mannered and worthy of acceptance.

मन्त्र - २

या सुबाहु: स्वंगुरि: सुषूमा बहुसूवरी|
तस्यै विश्पत्न्ये हवि: सिनीवाल्यै जुहोतन ||

(या) जो (सुबाहु) भुजाओं से सुन्दर कार्य करने वाली, (स्वंगुरि) सुन्दर व्यवहार करने वाली, (सुषूमा) उचित नेतृत्त्व करने वाली एवं (बहुसूवरी) बहुत से वीरों की जननी है, (तस्यै) ऐसी, (विश्पत्न्ये) विश्व को पालने वाली, (सिनीवाल्यै) अन्न्दायिनी/गृहपत्नी को, (हवि:) देने योग्य पदार्थ (जुहोतन) प्रदान करो

Women are endowed with the ability to perform great deeds with their arms/hands, endearing behaviour, good leadership and are providers of many brave sons. Provide these women, who provide for the home and world, all the goods that they require. 

मन्त्र - ३

या विश्पत्नीन्द्रमसि प्रतीची सहस्रस्तुकाभियन्ती देवी |
विष्णो: पत्नी तुभ्यं राता हवींषि पतिं देवि राधसे चोदयस्व ||

(या) जो (विश्पत्नी) विश्व/संतानों को पालने वाली, ( सहस्रस्तुका) सहस्रों स्तुतियों के योग्य, (अभियन्ती) चारों ओर बुद्धिमान (देवी) देवी है, वो (इंद्रम) ऐश्वर्य को (अससि ) ग्रहण करे. (हवींषि) देने योग्य पदार्थ, (तुभ्यं) तेरे लिए दिए (राता) दिएहैं, हे देवी! (विष्णो: पत्नी) कार्यों में व्याप्त  वीर पुरुष की पत्नी! (पतिं) अपने पति को (राधसे) संपत्ति के लिए (चोदयस्व) प्रोत्साहित कर.


Woman! She is divine, wise in all respects, is provider for the world (provider of meals and off springs) and is worthy of thousands of praises. O divine woman! all that is worth providing is there for you. O divine soul! encourage your brave husband to earn prosperity and property.

सूक्त ४७ 

मन्त्र - १

कुहूं देवीं सुकृतं विदमनापसमस्मिन यज्ञे सुहवा जोहवीमि |
सानों रयिं विश्ववारं नि यच्छाद ददातु वीरं शतदायमुक्थ्यम ||

 मैं (अस्मिन) इस (यज्ञे) यज्ञ में, (सुकृतं) सुन्दर कार्य करने वाली, (देवीं) देवी समान (विदमनापसम) कर्तव्यपरायण, (कुहूं) अद्भुत स्वभाव वाली स्त्री का (सुहवा) विनीत (जोहवीमि) आव्हान करता हूँ. (सा) वही (न:) हमें (शतदायम) असंख्य धन युक्त,(उक्थ्यम) प्रशंसा योग्य एवं (वीरं) वीर (ददातु) प्रदान करती है एवं (विश्ववारं) उत्तम व्यवहार वाला (रयिं) धन भी (नि) नित्य (यच्छाद) प्रदान करती है.

By this yagna, I courteously call upon the woman who is divine, performs good deeds, is dutiful and is endowed with wonderful disposition. She is the one, with whose help, we beget off springs who are brave and also wealth that is plentiful and upright.

सूक्त ४८

मन्त्र - १

राकामहं सुहवां सुष्टुती हुवे ऋणोंतु  नः सुभगा बोधतु त्मना |
सीव्यत्वपः सूच्याछिद्यमानया ददातु वीरं शतदायमुक्थ्यम ||

 हे (राकाम) पूर्णमासी के सामान शोभायमान अथवा सुखदायनी पत्नी, (अहम) मैं तुम्हें (सुष्टुती) स्तुति से एवं (सुहवां) सुहावने ढंग से (हुवे) आव्हान देता हूँ. हे (सुभगा) सौभाग्यवती, मुझे (ऋणोंतु) सुनो और (त्मना) अपनी आत्मा से (बोधतु) समझो. जिस प्रकार तुम (अच्छिद्यामान्य) एक न टूटने वाली (सूच्या) सुई की भांति (अपः) गृहस्थी को (सीव्यतु) सिलती हो, मुझे (शतदायम) सैंकड़ों धनवाला, (वीरं) वीर एवं (उक्थ्यम) प्रशंसा योग्य संतान (ददातु) प्रदान करो.

O wife, who is as pleasing as a full moon night! Like an unbreakable suture, you sew knit my family life so provide me with off springs which are praise worthy, prosperous and gallant. With this praise, I invite you courteously so that, you, who has been blessed with good fortune, listen to me and understand me with all your heart and soul.

मन्त्र - २

यास्ते राके सुमतयः सुपेशसो याभिर्ददासि दाशुषे वसूनि |
ताभिर्नो अद्य सुमना उपागहि सहस्रपोषं सुभगे रराणा || 

 हे (राका) पूर्णमासी के सामान शोभायमान अथवा सुखदायनी पत्नी!(या) यह  (ते) तेरी (सुमतयः) भली मति (सुपेशसो) बहुत स्वर्ण प्रदान करती है| (याभिः) इनसे तू  (दाशुषे) इस धन देने वाले को (वसूनि) अनेकों धन (ददासि) प्रदान करती है | हे (सुभगे) सौभाग्यवती! अपनी (ताभिः) सुमति से (सहस्रपोषं) सहस्रों प्रकार से पुष्टि करती हुई (सुमना) प्रसन्न हो कर (उपागहि) समीप आ |

O wife, who is as pleasing as a full moon night! Your wise counsel is as enriching as gold. With this (wise counsel) you provide this provider (husband) with enormous wealth. O blessed! come to me with pleasure and provide me wealth in thousands of ways with your wise counsel.  

सूक्त ४९

मन्त्र १ 

देवानां पत्नी रूश्तीर वन्तु नाः प्रवन्तु नस्तुजये वाजसातये | याः
पार्थिवासो या अपामपि ब्रते तो न देविः सुहवाः शर्म यच्छन्तु || 

(देवानां) विद्वानों एवं राजाओं की (पत्निः)  वे पत्नियां, जो (उशती:) उपकार की इच्छुक हैं, (तुजये) स्थान, बल एवं (वाजसातये) अन्न से (अवन्तु) तृप्त करें एवं संग्राम में हमारी रक्षा करें. पृथ्वी में और भी जो रानियाँ हैं, जो जल के सामान उपकारी स्वभाव वाली हैं, वे आव्हान योग्य देवियाँ हमें घर वा सुख प्रदान करें.

Those women, who are wives of wise men and kings, and desirous of philanthropy! Provide us with space, power, food and protect us during wars. All the queens, who have benevolent tendencies like water, are worthy of calling and we call upon them to provide us with homes and comfort.

मन्त्र - २

उत्गना व्यन्तु देवपतनीरिन्द्राण्य अग्नाय्यश्विनी राट|
आ रोदंसी वरुणानी ऋणोंतु व्यन्तु देवीर्य ऋतुर्जनीनाम ||

(आ) और भी (देवपतनी) देवपत्नियाँ, (आग्नायी) तेजवान स्त्रियाँ, (इन्द्राणी) राजा के सामान ऐश्वर्य वाली, (राट) ऐश्वर्य युक्त, (अश्विनी) पराक्रमी/शीघ्रगामी स्त्रियाँ (गनाः) प्रजा की वाणी/पुकार (व्यन्तु ) को सुने|(जनीनाम) स्त्रीयों के (ऋतु:) काल में, ये (वरुणानी) श्रेष्ठ एवं (रोदंसी) रूद्र सामान ज्ञानवान (देवी) देवियाँ उस पुकार पर (व्यन्तु) व्यवहार करें||

Women, who are fiery, full of grandeur, grand as kings, brave riders and wives of wise men! They should listen to the call of the people. During the hour of women, these fine women, who are possessed with wisdom and sternness should listen to people and act accordingly.
